Fearna Storage

Renewable energy storage for future generations

Pump Storage

About The Project

The Fearna Storage project is a proposed pumped storage hydro (‘PSH’) scheme with an installed capacity of up to 1,800 MW making it one of the largest PSH projects under development in the UK. The project is located at the western end of Glengarry which forms part of SSE’s ‘Great Glen’ hydro cascade.

Loch Quoich will form the lower reservoir and needs no modification to support both the existing Quoich Hydro scheme and the proposed Fearna PSH project. This both maximises the use of an existing renewable energy asset and avoids the need for additional dams. The mountainous location is particularly suited to a PSH project as it provides high head (average of 376m) with short tunnels (approx. 1km) and approx. 37GWh of stored energy. This will provide 20hrs of exported energy at 1.8GW. Projects such as Fearna, with large installed capacities and long durations of energy storage are essential for balancing the UK grid as more renewable generation is built, reducing our dependency on fossil fuels and contributing to Net Zero. The Fearna PSH project will complement the existing conventional hydro projects in the area and represents the next chapter in Scotland’s rich hydropower heritage.
